The Jeep comes from military backgrounds. In early 1940, with the Western front covered in mud that clogged up more conventional forms and parts of transport, the motorcycle and horse, the United States Army invited over 130 companies to produce a prototype light reconnaissance vehicle to aid the Allied forces in their campaigns in Europe and Northern Africa. The Jeep was born from a collective effort of the three companies that responded, American Bantam Car Company, Willys-Overland Motors Inc. and Ford Motor Company. Theses three companies worked together though not by choice to produce the most dependable, tough go-anywhere vehicle possible. The Jeep proved its prowess over nature in various campaigns in W.W.II and then with the popularity gained in its wartime exploits hit the civilian auto parts markets in a slightly redesigned form. The civilian Jeep had many forms, all that imbodied some part of the tough, get-you-anywhere, American vehicle it had been from its inception. The Jeep slowly evolved through the years and through the changes in ownership while retaining the all American tough image. Jeep's meaning has been set by its inception as a war vehicle and expanded by the introduction to the civilian auto market and the introduction of new models to the Jeep line.
